My son was 14 months old when I really began to worry. I made a doctors appointment
and that lead to having his hearing tested, to running several medical test to no prevail for
the root cause of his symptoms. As a parent you feel helpless, scared, and lost. Why was
my son not talking yet? Surely at this age he should be at least saying momma or daddy.
Why is he not crawling around or pulling himself up? Why do all these doctors not know
what is wrong? We wasted a lot of time ruling out other conditions waiting for a positive
blood test, EKG or a CT Scan that could tell us something.

Later that night I sat in front of my computer, not really knowing what information to search for,
so I entered Autism Diagnosis. It took me to Autism Speaks web site where I watched a couple of
videos from their parent library. The first video was of a typical two year old toddler who was
given a set of toys to play with at a table. A plastic plate, spoon, bowl, a baby bottle and baby doll.
The boy play pretended with all the toys. The more he appropriately played with the them, the
further my heart sank. My son was around the same age and I knew that was not his typical play.
It was a realization of how delayed my son truly was.
The next video was of an autistic child, who was given the same set of toys. This little boy threw
the toys, turned the bowl over and beat them against the table. I was not only speechless but it
took my very breath away. Shocked, horrified, and relieved all at the same time. I most of
watched that video twenty times watching this little boy's behaviors so closely. I made my
entire family come sit at the computer and watch both videos. One by one I could see the
shock and horror come over each of them like a wave. The more we watched each
others reactions the more devastated we all became.
My family and I started gathering these toys from the video and meeting in my sons room. We
looked like a bunch of interns who needed pens and clip boards as we conducted our own Autism
Test with him. We gave him the same set of toys as in the video, and all sat on the edges of our seats
for what he would do with them, even though we all could have predicted it. Just like the autistic
child, my son flipped the bowl over on the plate and started spinning it, he began chewing on the
spoon and beating the baby doll against the table.
