Stimming

Stimming Behaviors such as, Spinning, Rocking, and Hand Flapping

can be cute when their small but not so much the older they get!

Stimming is a repetitive body movement,

such as hand flapping.

The term is short for self-stimulation.

People without autism also self-stimulate;

nail biting, hair twirling and foot tapping.

Some Autistic children stim by spinning in circles, or climbing,

running, rocking, etc.. This is a video of an adorable little

boy who is spinning and hand flapping.

I had no idea what Stimming was or that it was what my child had

been doing. I didn't know why my son did it,

nor did I notice when it became a problem behavior.

I never saw any harm.

Some of their behaviors can become dangerous the older and bigger

they become. The best thing to do for this

Characteristic Of Autism is to modify it to

something more appropriate.

My child wanted to run circles so I had to found a way for him to do it safely. I bought my him his first trampoline, it had the netting around it and the poles were wrapped in safety installation. This trampoline was a real life saver. It gave him a safe way to run circles and left me able to enjoy watching him spin in circles and just be a kid. My heart didn't sink every time he fell down and he would jump enough in between the spinning so he wouldn't make himself sick. I also got him a sit n spin.

Stimming is a behavior that can and should be modified at an early

age. Typical people Stim everyday just in more acceptable ways.

When people see someone doing Odd behaviors such as

rocking themselves or spinning in circles in public chances

are they frown on these behaviors because they

don't understand them.

But if they saw someone biting their nails, or grinding their

teeth they would not think anything about it because these have

become acceptable Stimming behaviors.

Everyone has some nervous tick they do to self sooth themselves.

A wise woman once explained it to me in a way that I could

understand why my child would do this Odd Behavior. She said

that right before an auto accident people bare down and clinch

their teeth together to brace for impact.

It is a self soothing behavior that helps us brace for the

unknown that is about to happen to us.

We brace for impact, autistic children brace for experiences that are

new and unfamiliar, or when they are so excited they don't know how to

deal with the excitement. Teaching Autistic children how to control their

emotions or how to modify the Characteristics Of Autism can be very

difficult and challenging but the reward is an undistracted child that has

more control and focus on other things then these Odd behaviors.
